Marie's Molasses Cookies

Here's another recipe for molasses cookies; as part of my quest to find the perfect one. A guy at work brought these in and I asked for the recipe since they were a little different than usual. They are good, but they are not as good as those wonderful ones from Murray's Ice Cream in Westport. Someday i will figure the recipe out though....
Marie's Molasses Cookies
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/2 cup vegetable shortening, melted ad cooled
1 large egg
1/4 cup unsulfered molasses
3/4 cups old fashioned oats
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, spices and salt. Add melted, cooled shortening, egg and molasses; mix well. Stir in oats.
Drop dough by tablespoons onto an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten with bottom of a glass that has been dipped in sugar. Bake 8 to 10 minutes.
Yield: 2 dozen

I just found your blog a couple of weeks ago. Am I ever glad I did! I am going to give your cookies a try. One question: which molasses do you like best Grandma's or Br'er Rabbit? Excuse any spelling as I was just too darn lazy to get up and look at the bottles. I look forward to reading more of your blog. Thank you! N

I use whatever one is in the store. I have used both and don't know if I ever realized there was a difference.

I am also on a quest for the best molasses cookie. Truth-be-told, I just fell in love with my husband's ex-wife's grandmother's cookies. I never could get up the courage to ask for the recipe (being an out-law and all) so I just continue to try recipes as they come at me!
